PIMT Class Schedule

The Pennsylvania Institute of Massage Therapy offers a 633 hour program. The program hours include Anatomy & Physiology, Massage Theory & Practice, as well as Clinicls. Both day and evening classes are available. Full time students attend class on the average of 20 hours per week and should be able to complete the course within seven months. In addition, it is strongly advised that approximately 10 hours per week be set aside for home study. Although part of the core curriculum, the CLINIC HOURS are separate from the class schedule outlined below. Clinic hours average 4 hours per week (at times when the clinic is scheduled to be open) during the final 4 months of schooling for a total of 57 hours.

Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology Program

It is the firm belief at PIMT that a very good comprehension of Anatomy and Physiology is necessary for a Massage Therapist to be effective in the field. When working on the body, it is necessary to know how the body works. Our Anatomy and Physiology is one of the most in-depth programs in the area. The Anatomy and Physiology Program goes beyond that which is taught in Anatomy and Physiology I and II which is offered at local colleges.

The Anatomy and Physiology curriculum is nicely interwoven with the Massage curriculum to present it in such a way as to make it relevant to Massage Therapy. Since the PIMT student body is comprised of people with varied educational backgrounds, the curriculum is taught incrementally. This enables the novice to effectively learn, and the student with a background in Anatomy and Physiology to be substantially challenged by the material presented. Each section involves instruction concerning its relevance to Massage Therapy as well as any relevant pathology. At PIMT we firmly believe that the Massage Therapists is an active member of the Healthcare Community, and as such, must understand how they are altering the physiology of the body through massage. This knowledge enables the Therapist to identify any potential contraindications to massage, and allows the informed Therapist to modify their procedure if indicated.

Massage Therapy Program

Massage Theory
PIMT offers one of the most comprehensive massage programs in the area. Our goal is to graduate therapists who are more advanced in their skills than graduates from other schools. Our program introduces the student to the history of Swedish Massage, the five strokes involved, as well as indications and contraindications for its use. Our program is based on physiologic principles.

Students will learn:

Muscle Identification
Swedish Massage
Therapeutic Massage
Chair Massage
Myofascial Release
Myofascial Trigger Point
Orthopedic Massage
Active Isolated Stretching
Medical Billing
Hydrotherapy
Blood Pressure
CPR and First Aid
and many more

Students will also learn how to perform a proper medical history with their clients as well as proper documentation of the massage. Our students are also introduced to Reflexology, Animal Massage, Infant Massage, and Pregnancy Massage as well as learn about other adjunct therapies. Upon completion of the course at PIMT, our graduates are prepared and able to sit for the National Certification Exam.

Massage Practice

This course provides the ability to complete a massage from beginning to end. This includes performing a proper client intake/interview, performing the massage properly, and scheduling the next appointment. Students will gain the hands-on experience necessary to be comfortable with a variety of massage techniques. Students will have a thorough knowledge of draping techniques. It is a requirement of PIMT for proper draping to be used at all times. Deep muscle technique is emphasized in the curriculum which will better enable a graduate to work with a Chiropractor or Physical Therapist.

PIMT Clinic

PIMT maintains an active student clinic in which senior students have the opportunity to perform a one-hour full body massage on clients from the community. This enables the student to gain the experience of massaging various body types and dealing with different personalities. There are strict clinic requirements that must be met prior to graduation.

While in a clinical massage, students will have to perform intakes, including blood pressure readings, on all new clients. Students will also have to medically document the intake as well as the massage.

The clinic supervisor will observe the intakes and check the massage while being administered. Students will then be graded on their performance in all areas of the clinic.
