About the seminar

This unique seminar is being presented throughout the country to acquaint massage therapists with information that has yet to be taught in formal schools.

This is an interactive workshop in which the participants learn about massage for people with special needs. The workshop consists of lecture, hands-on demonstrations, role-playing designed to assess diagnoses and determine treatment methods, and questions and answers that encourage discussions.

The therapist will learn how to adapt their massage styles to meet the needs of people with single or multiple handicaps such as Cerebral Palsy, Prader-Willi Syndrome, developmental challenges, mental illness, and seizure disorders.

There will be specific emphasis on how massage plays an integral part in behavior management as well as marketing ideas to tap into this overlooked population.

Participants will be provided handout materials, including slides used during the class. In addition, they will be provided printed information that will assist them in promoting massage for people with special needs in their geographic area. Participants will complete a short quiz at the end of the course to assess what they have learned from the workshop.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

Understand the physiological and psychological reasons that people with special needs benefit from massage

Apply the special precautions required for people who have seizure disorders, Down Syndrome, and other syndromes.

Be able to transfer a person from a wheelchair to a massage table.

Understand the use of massage as an intervention in behavior management.

Maintain required documentation for special needs clients.

Be able to actively participate in the Interdisciplinary Team process.

Know basic marketing approaches for special needs populations.
